In January, FHWA issued a final rule amending its Buy America regulations to eliminate the agency’s longstanding Manufactured Products General Waiver (effective since 1983) and establish new requirements for manufactured products used in federally funded highway and bridge projects. The final rule was delayed by three days and will now take effect March 20, 2025.

Other Offices & Agencies

  • Today, Adrienne Camire was appointed as the Deputy Administrator and Acting Administrator of FMCSA. Camire previously served as FHWA Chief Counsel during Trump’s first term.
  • The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions advanced President Trump’s nomination of Keith Sonderling to be Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor by a 12 to 11 vote. His nomination now awaits consideration by the full Senate.
  • The Senate is expected to vote on the nomination of Lori Chavez-DeRemer to become Secretary of Labor next week. The Senate voted 66-30, with fifteen Democrats voting alongside all but one Republican, to limit debate on the nomination earlier this week.
  • After 25 percent tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada briefly went into effect earlier this week, President Trump delayed the tariffs for most imports until April 2. The 25 percent levy on goods from China, which were also imposed earlier this week, remain in effect.
  • On March 11, the House Committee on Armed Services will hold a hearing, titled “The State of U.S. Shipbuilding.” The witnesses list is provided below. Please let me know if you would like us to cover this hearing for IANA.
